Medical Information:

This medication is used to treat gout.

Colchicine when used regularly can help prevent a gout attack (e.g. gouty arthritis). Though not a true pain reliever colchicine relieves the pain that occurs with a gout attack. It is believed to act by decreasing the amount of swelling in the affected joint.

OTHER USES: This section contains uses of this drug that are not listed in the approved professional labeling for the drug but that may be prescribed by your health care professional. Use this drug for a condition that is listed in this section only if it has been so prescribed by your health care professional.

This drug may also be used for other types of arthritis and certain liver conditions and to prevent the aches and pains of a certain inherited disease (familial Mediterranean fever).

How to use Colchicine Oral:Take this medication by mouth exactly as directed by your doctor. When prescribed "as needed" to prevent a gout attack from becoming too painful take 1 or 2 tablets followed by 1 tablet every hour or 2 tablets every 2 hours until the pain is gone or you have stomach upset or diarrhea. Colchicine controls pain best when taken at the first sign of a gout attack. This "as needed" dosing should not be done more than every 3 days.

To prevent or lessen the number of gout attacks per year your doctor may direct you to take colchicine on a regular basis. Dosage will be based on your medical condition the number of gout attacks you have per year and your response to therapy. If you are directed to take colchicine regularly take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Before you have any surgery (including dental surgery) your dose may need to be increased a few days in advance and remain increased until a few days after surgery.

Inform your doctor if joint pain persists if it worsens 12 hours after the beginning of the attack or if it is not completely gone in 2 days.

Colchicine Oral may also be used to treat:Arthritis of the Toes and Fingers due to Sarcoidosis A Chronic Multisystem Inflammatory Disorder Inflammation of the Joints due to Gout Treatment to Prevent Gout Familial Mediterranean Fever

Industry News : Marquette General Health System joins Premier healthcare alliance. Marquette General Health System of Marquette, Mich., has joined the Premier healthcare alliance, consisting of more than 2,500 hospitals and 76,000 other healthcare sites, to improve care delivery. “We believe this new partnership will help improve the value of the health services Marquette provides to our community and look forward to furthering our work with Premier.” As a Premier owner, Marquette leverages a national purchasing network delivering industry-leading contract pricing. The not-for-profit health system formerly utilized MedAssets as its national purchasing organization. Marquette also collaborates and compares performance with other members of the alliance to improve care efficiency while safely reducing waste and costs using the nation's largest clinical, financial and operational database. "Premier's business model is unique in that it is completely owned by its members and thus accountable to and fully aligned with their goals," said Gary Muller, president & CEO at Marquette. "We believe this new partnership will help improve the value of the health services Marquette provides to our community and look forward to furthering our work with Premier." The health system participates in two Premier collaboratives for additional performance improvement opportunities. As a new member of Premier's ASCEND® (Accelerated Supply Chain Endeavor) program, Marquette aggregates, monitors and analyzes supply chain data to identify improvement opportunities. This includes simplified and consistent purchasing processes, appropriate clinical utilization and specially negotiated contracts. Members of ASCEND have saved $56 million over two years, without sacrificing the quality of care. To support its purchasing decisions, the health system uses Premier supply chain tools like SpendAdvisor® MySpend™, to easily examine spend data.
